Serious underdogs heading into upset victories over Georgia Southern and Appalachian State, The Citadel played for the first time as a front-running favorite on Saturday night. The results were not pretty.  L

Why so much interest?  "Mormonism is often seen as this bizarre thing," said Zane Segle, a Spanish language and literature professor at The Citadel. Because his students often don't know he is Mormon, they blurt out jokes about Mormons having lots of wives or how they all have big families.

Yet, acknowledging the authority of the Roman Catholic Church means that these young adults, seeking to make their marks on a large and often unruly world, don't have to figure everything out for themselves. That, ultimately, is reassuring.  "It's scary to be the arbiter of truth. But to know you are part of a framework is a good thing," says Maggie Lally, an English professor at The Citadel.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Terrell Robinson rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown and passed for a score to lead Chattanooga to a 28-10 victory over The Citadel on Saturday. After The Citadel led 3-0 early, the Mocs (2-3, 1-1 Southern Conference) scored 21 consecutive points to take control of the game. Chattanooga controlled the ball, scoring on drives of 78, 82, 85 and 85 yards.

There was no miracle comeback this time, and no sign of The Citadel football team that knocked off two top 10 teams in the season’s first three weeks.  The Bulldogs learned Saturday night that winning a Southern Conference title won’t be as easy as it might have looked during a 3-0 start that included wins over league powers Georgia Southern and Appalachian State.

Quarterback is a touchy subject at Chattanooga these days, but Mocs coach Russ Huesman is clear on one thing.  He wants more “touches” for his two quarterbacks in today’s game against No. 11 The Citadel at Johnson Hagood Stadium.

After victories over Southern Conference favorites Georgia Southern and Appalachian State, there will be no more sneaking up on teams for The Citadel. The Bulldogs learned that the hard way on Saturday night, falling to Chattanooga by 28-10 at Johnson Hagood Stadium. It was their second straight loss after a 3-0 start.

The first woman to graduate from The Citadel said Friday the school provided what she needed to succeed in college: structure, discipline and a challenge. Nancy Mace, who graduated in 1999, spoke about her experience at The Citadel to the Palmetto Chapter of the group Women in Defense in North Charleston.

Nancy Bright, deputy director of auxiliary enterprises at The Citadel, has been selected for the Leadership South Carolina Class of 2013.The program, which is supported by Clemson University's Institute for Economic and Community Development at the Sandhill Research and Education Center, was established in 1979 to provide gifted and motivated South Carolinians an opportunity to advance their leadership skills while broadening their understanding of issues facing the state.

The defending national champion TCU rifle team has been ranked No. 1 in the preseason Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association poll heading into their season opener on Sunday at the Ole Miss Invitational.  Returning along with Scherer are seniors Sarah Beard and Caitlin Morrissey. The three are 38-2 in their careers, with national titles in 2010 and last season. The Frogs will open at home against the Citadel on Oct. 6.

ReVille worked as a summer camp counselor at The Citadel and at other schools, camps, churches and recreation programs. He said at his guilty plea in June that he began assaulting boys in 2002.  ReVille was sentenced to 50 years in prison. He is currently being kept at the Kirkland Correctional Institution, where state prison officials put inmates with special security concerns or are too bad for maximum security facilities.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A former Charleston area teacher and coach who pleaded guilty to nearly two dozen child sex charges is being held in protective custody at a state prison in Columbia. South Carolina prison officials say 33-year-old Louis "Skip" ReVille is being held by himself in a cell for his own safety.

The plan was to sit Mark Thomas for a year. At 6-2 and 210 pounds, the quiet kid from Brunswick, Ga., was a bit lean for defensive end, his position on The Citadel’s football team. There was only one problem with the Mark Thomas plan — Mark Thomas.  As the Bulldogs prepared for their Sept. 8 game with Georgia Southern and the Eagles’ famed triple-option offense, Thomas was on the scout team and “wreaking havoc” in practice, according to Higgins.

What: Joe Crespino will discuss and sign his book, "Strom Thurmond's America," where he examines the political career of S.C.'s longest-serving senator and how Thurmond, a Democrat until switching parties in 1964, helped shape modern conservatism and sparked the realignment of Southern and national politics. Convicted child molester Louis "Skip" ReVille is alone in a prison cell. He doesn't eat with other inmates. Other than the guards and visitors he receives, he rarely interacts with many people.ReVille, 33, will remain at the maximum-security Kirkland Correctional Institution in Columbia, according to Clark Newsom, S.C. Department of Corrections spokesman.

The Citadel’s transition to the triple-option offense back in November 2009 didn’t produce results overnight.  In fact, it was downright ugly in year one.  The anemic offense in 2010 didn’t catch head coach Kevin Higgins by surprise, though. He was warned there would be growing pains, and that warning came from a credible source.

College of Charleston defeated The Citadel for the 27th straight time in their volleyball series, winning 25-14, 25-14, 25-18 in Southern Conference action Tuesday night at McAlister Fieldhouse.The Cougars (9-5, 2-0) are now 27-0 all-time against the Bulldogs (2-14, 0-2).

Sunday’s story that the president of The Citadel plans to implement procedures to reduce hazing was not news. There is nothing here, for example, that was not recommended in the 1980 Mood Report. Except this time the promise is for “cultural” change. Yet an essential requirement for cultural change, admission of non-cadets into the Day Program from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., is not addressed.

Don Sparks, a Citadel economics professor and veteran cycling advocate, said Tuesday was the first time he saw so many local mayors in one room to talk about bike routes. Riley was joined by Mount Pleasant Mayor Billy Swails, James Island Mayor Bill Woolsey and Isle of Palms Mayor Dick Cronin. Sparks urged the mayors to "take some risks and spend some political capital to make this happen."

Those goals are to make the playoffs and compete for the SoCon championship. Coach Russ Huesman said his only concern this week is 15th-ranked The Citadel (3-1, 2-0), which hosts UTC at Johnson Hagood Stadium on Saturday. "We've got to win a game," Huesman said.

The Citadel’s 52-14 loss at North Carolina State on Saturday cost the Bulldogs only one spot in each of the FCS national polls. The Citadel (3-1, 2-0 SoCon) returns to league play against Chattanooga (1-3, 0-1) on Saturday at Johnson Hagood Stadium, and the Bulldogs are eager to get on with trying to win their first league title since 1992.

A Citadel report identifying hazing, unsafe conditions, inadequate adult supervision, lack of discipline, breaches of the honor system and alcohol abuse is a blow to the respected military college. But the school administration’s reaction to the report, so far, has been admirable — the kind of reaction one should expect from a college that values honor, duty and respect.

The same could be said for his mixed martial arts career. After four years at Western Maryland College – now known as McDaniel College – where he wrestled for four years and finished fourth in the country among Division III wrestlers as a senior, McNally moved to South Carolina to begin working on his Master’s degree at The Citadel. While attending night classes, he met a local Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor who wanted McNally to teach he and his students fundamental wrestling moves. At the time, McNally was helping coach The Citadel’s wrestling team, so he agreed.

Scott Buchanan, executive director of The Citadel Symposium on Southern Politics, said it's too soon to tell what impact the revelations could have on Harrell's leadership future. "If you look in other states where you've had legislative leaders get defeated or have a tough time getting re-elected to a position, it's because of controversy of this sort," he said. "This is the sort of issue that doesn't help." A spokesman for Harrell said Monday that the campaign expenditures were legitimate and documented.

In the history of Army Military Intelligence, just 233 soldiers and civilians have been inducted into the Military Intelligence Hall of Fame. Retired Army Col. Tony Lackey, former assistant commandant for discipline, is among them. Lackey was inducted Sept. 14 and presented with the Knowlton Award recognizing individuals who have contributed significantly to the promotion of Army military intelligence in ways that stand out in the eyes of the recipients, their superiors, subordinates, and peers.

Nick Buoniconti was the linebacker who anchored the No-Name Defense for the Miami Dolphins when they went undefeated in 1972. His Dolphins teams made three consecutive Super Bowl appearances, winning two. Buoniconti, 71, was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001. After Buoniconti’s son Marc was paralyzed while playing football for the Citadel in 1985, the family formed the Buoniconti Fund to support research for spinal cord injuries at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at the University of Miami.

In the wake of past shortcomings and successes, the goal was to include the entire campus, to identify the biggest issues.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- When Darien Robinson broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run early in Saturday night's game, The Citadel's powerful running attack looked poised to keep the Bulldogs' game with North Carolina State close.  Instead, Robinson's run was about the only highlight on the night for the Bulldogs in a 52-14 loss.

RALEIGH — In the big picture, The Citadel’s 52-14 loss at North Carolina State on Saturday night will have little impact on the Bulldogs’ suddenly elevated goals for this football season. The Citadel will bring home a guarantee check for $375,000 and get on with the business of trying to win a Southern Conference championship.

RALEIGH, N.C. - After running back Shadrach Thornton scored his first touchdown on the first drive of the game, N.C. State coach Tom O'Brien tried to keep the freshman from getting too over-hyped about the fast start.      "It's going to be a long night," O'Brien said to Thornton.

The Citadel espouses the values of honor, duty and respect, but it often fails to live up to them, Lt. Gen. John Rosa said. That’s what school leaders have learned in the wake of investigations into the military college’s handling of a complaint against child molester Skip ReVille, said Rosa, the school’s president.

Guard members, state guards can’t be sent to fight foreign wars and are called into action by the governor or adjutant general. When called upon, the state guard must be prepared to mobilize quickly — often within hours. 

“Today we’ll be moving more than a ton of a material, on our backs, from our forward operating post,” said Mullikin, as the group put on their packs and took a few more swigs of water.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Amid the wreckage of The Citadel’s 52-14 loss at North Carolina State on Saturday night was some good news. Derek Douglas is back.  The Bulldogs’ all-Southern Conference defensive tackle, who tore the ACL in his right knee during spring practice, played for the first time this season against the Wolfpack.

At 7 a.m., the voices of 177 knobs echo off the walls of 5th Battalion at The Citadel. With books held inches in front of their faces, the freshman cadets are reading their “knob knowledge” at the top of their lungs while upperclassmen inspect their uniforms.  Carson Smith, a sophomore linebacker on the Bulldogs’ nationally ranked and undefeated football team, emerges from his room on the second floor a few minutes after 7.

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Citadel’s football team has made some history already this season, but the Bulldogs will have to wait for their first victory over an Atlantic Coast Conference foe. North Carolina State’s superior speed overwhelmed The Citadel on Saturday night at Carter-Finley Stadium, carrying the Wolfpack to a 52-14 victory before a sellout crowd of 55,145.

JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Re-enactors representing both the North and the South are performing in the Charleston area this weekend. Also appearing is the Confederate Re-enactment Unit from The Citadel. The units will make presentations, and there are educational materials as well as historic items on display.

Things were going so well for The Citadel.Last week, U.S. News & World Report named the military college the top public regional university in the South - for the second year in a row. The Bulldog football team is 3-0, a feat that has brought The Citadel a lot of flattering press. But a sex scandal can quickly overshadow all that.

A friend who runs a recruiting service in Pittsburgh showed Higgins a highlight tape of a “little guy in Harrisburg.” The little guy was 5-9 Ben Dupree, now a junior and the starting quarterback for the 3-0 Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 10 in FCS and travel to
North Carolina State on Saturday.“I saw how quick he was,” Higgins recalled, “and I got in my car and drove three hours from Pittsburgh to Harrisburg, over the mountains and through the snow.”

• Former Santorum, Romney staffer accused of same-sex Citadel harassment. Steven Munoz, a graduate of the South Carolina military college, stands accused of sexual attacks on two male cadets. The complainants are still students there and allege the misconduct took place in 2010 and 2011.

A suspect in case of sexual misconduct at the Citadel worked at one time for the campaign of Rick Santorum, as an aide. He also did advance work on the campaign for Mitt Romney, according to an email from the Citadel. The internal email said that a 23-year old graduate of Citadel is accused of mistreating two fellow cadets, who are females, while he was at the military academy. The two female cadets filled reports with the police last week against Steven Munoz, who was a 2011 graduate.

Clover High football is mired in a rut. The Blue Eagles are off to an 0-4 start while being outscored 186-26, and coach John Devine resigned Tuesday.  But former Blue Eagles quarterback Aaron Miller is a reminder of happier days in Clover football. He has helped The Citadel to a 3-0 record, highlighted by wins against perennial Football Championship Series powers Georgia Southern and Appalachian State.

A South Carolina Republican political operative has been accused of playing the role of abusive villain in the latest sexual abuse drama to befall The Citadel – South Carolina’s scandal-scarred military college.Twenty-three-year-old Steven Munoz – a key member of former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum’s 2012 presidential campaign (and occasional freelancer for GOP nominee Mitt Romney) – has been accused of groping two underclassmen at the Charleston, S.C. school.

The attorney for a former Citadel cadet accused of sexual misconduct said his client's reputation is being tarnished by a staffer at the military college who disagrees with his politics.Attorney Andy Savage said a female Citadel employee leaked information about the allegations to embarrass his client and taint the endeavors of former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania. The former cadet is active in Republican politics and worked on Santorum's failed presidential bid.

Two underclassmen at The Citadel, South Carolina’s public military university, have reported four separate incidents of unwanted sexual advances. The incidents occurred in 2010 and 2011. The accused is a recent graduate and a former staffer on Rick Santorum’s failed Presidential campaign.

Steven Munoz, a graduate of the Citadel who worked on the presidential campaigns of Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney, has been accused of sexually harassing two male cadets while at the prestigious military academy.  The cadets, who are still enrolled, both claimed in reports filed last week that Munoz made unwanted advances.

A suspect currently being investigated for sexual harassment at The Citadel is a former Rick Santorum campaign aide who also did ad hoc work for Mitt Romney's campaign, according to Buzzfeed. Steven Munoz, a 23-year-old graduate of South Carolina's military college, The Citadel, has been accused of sexually harassing two younger male cadets while Munoz was a student, according to internal reports obtained by Buzzfeed.

Tom O'Brien was concerned enough about The Citadel's triple-option ?offense that he ordered up a couple of days' practice on it back in August.Now that the North Carolina State coach has seen the Bulldogs' option in action, he sounds even more worried.  "They will certainly come here thinking they can whoop us," said O'Brien, whose 2-1 Wolfpack host The Citadel (3-0) on Saturday.

The Citadel is still dealing with a sex abuse case that was first made public almost a year ago but now a new one has surfaced. The prestigious South Carolina Military College confirmed Tuesday that there are new sexual assault complaints from students.
The prior case involved Citadel alum Louis "Skip" ReVille, who allegedly engaged in sexual activity with campers at the college's summer program.

NEW YORK – A former staff member for Rick Santorum’s presidential campaign has been accused of sexual propositioning and unwanted touching by two cadets at The Citadel, South Carolina’s public military university.  The two men who reported four separate allegations of sexual misconduct in 2010 and 2011 to campus police do not want to pursue the case, and no criminal charges were filed, according to Service Women’s Action Network, which monitors such incidents.

The State Law Enforcement Division has been asked to investigate new allegations of sexually inappropriate conduct at The Citadel involving a former cadet who reportedly groped underclassmen. Two cadets came forward last week to file police reports against a 23-year-old alumnus who graduated last year, according to campus police.

Citadel Cadet Nick Slater has been awarded a Rotary Ambassadorial Global Scholarship for the 2013-2014 academic year to study at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Slater, a senior from Lawrenceville, Ga., is a member of Victor Company. He will graduate in May 2013 with a dual major in political science and biology. In Ireland, he will be studying for his master’s degree in global health

According to Charlene Gunnels with the Citadel Office  of External Affairs,  two cadets reported  incidents to Citadel public safety officers last week. Gunnels says the first supposed sexual assault  happened 18 months ago on campus. The accused was a 2011 graduate and is no  longer at the Citadel.

NC State has rebounded nicely after losing its opener to Tennessee, with victories over Connecticut and South Alabama. The Wolfpack will hope to keep things trending in a positive direction when they face off with the Citadel, an FCS team, in Week 4.

Six individuals and one team will be honored as the Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame will welcome its 17th class of inductees on Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Holiday Inn in Enfield.  The Class of 2012 inductees include Bob Winch (Citadel soccer coach), Frank “Lefty” Jedziniak, Colleen Finnerty, Bob Vranich, and Chris Caminiti. The late Marion Riley will receive the George Daly Jr. Away, and the 1982 Enfield High ice hockey team, which won the state championship, will be honored with the team award.

It’s really difficult to understand how the FCS coaches still have Georgia Southern ahead of The Citadel in their top 25 poll. This is part of the reason – no offense, coaches, or whoever votes for you – that we’ve always used The Sports Network poll as the official list. It’s a larger group of voters, 165 to just 26, and therefore usually seems more accurate

Nicole Levermann’s goal in the 84th minute capped a late scoring frenzy for The Citadel as the Bulldogs scored three times in the final 10 minutes to top Charleston Southern, 3-2, in women’s soccer. Mariana Garcia cut the Buccaneers’ lead to 2-1 in the 81st minute off a corner kick by Anastasia Mesa. Vanessa Aponte equalized just over a minute later with her first goal of the season, taking a pass from McKenzie Duncan to beat CSU keeper Caitlin Cody.

Prior to the 3-0 start for the The Citadel in 2012, the program's success on the gridiron has been fleeting, to say the least. After all, the Bulldogs have managed just four six-win campaigns and only three winning seasons since their 1992 Southern Conference championship season, which saw the Bulldogs go 11-2 overall and 6-2 in the Southern Conference under the direction of legendary coach Charlie Taaffe.

Three weeks ago, notions of a conference championship and playoff berth for The Citadel seemed like the kind of happy talk all teams engage in before opening kickoff.  After all, the Bulldogs have accomplished neither since 1992, and entered this season projected to finish eighth in the nine-team Southern Conference.

On Friday afternoon, a federal judge dismissed two counts of a lawsuit against Citadel President John W. Rosa while upholding a third count. The lawsuit was filed by John Doe 2, who alleges that Louis Neal "Skip" ReVille sexually assaulted him as a minor after ReVille finished working at the Citadel as a summer camp counselor and staff member.

Manufacturing - B. Christopher "Chris" Brown has been named vice president at General Dynamics Land Systems-Force Protection in Ladson, overseeing all operations. He has a bachelor's degree from The Citadel and an international master's degree in business administration from the University of South Carolina.

Real estate -Lauren Hatley has joined Carolina One Real Estate as an agent in the Mount Pleasant Coleman Boulevard office.

We are all entitled to our Penn State anger, more so for Lowcountry residents shocked by simultaneously unfolding molestation charges against Skip ReVille, an eventually convicted former Citadel cadet and summer camp counselor, who also was a coach and teacher. But this is a terrifically presented contribution to an American tragedy that transcends sports like few others.

Well, one week after The Citadel beat defending Southern Conference champion Georgia Southern, it rolled past Appalachian State, 52-28, and it turns out we   do know something: the Bulldogs have plenty of bite to them.

BOONE, N.C. — When Domonic Jones came to The Citadel four years ago, he might have dreamed of becoming the heir apparent to Andre Roberts. After all, Roberts had set Citadel receiving records in coach Kevin Higgins’ pass-happy spread offense, enough to earn himself  a third-round pick in the NFL draft. District Judge Richard Mark Gergel granted motions to dismiss allegations against Rosa of supervisory liability and civil conspiracy.

BATON ROUGE, LA (AP) - Stump Mitchell has been fired as Southern University's football coach.  Friday's announcement came after a 6-0 loss Thursday to Mississippi Valley state. It was Southern's home opener and the second loss in as many games this season.

COLUMBIA — The Citadel might have knocked off the heavy favorite to win the Southern Conference last week, but coach Kevin Higgins said it isn’t time to start calling his Bulldogs a contender, especially with a game against another conference powerhouse in Appalachian State coming up Saturday.

BOONE, N.C. — By halftime of The Citadel’s 52-28 trouncing of No. 7 Appalachian State today, Mountaineer fans already had booed their team twice and were streaming toward the parking lots outside of Kidd Brewer Stadium. Hard to blame them. The Citadel turned in one of the most thoroughly dominating halves it its 105 seasons of college football, jumping to leads of 31-0 in the second quarter, 38-7 at half and 45-7 early in the third quarter.

BOONE, N.C. — The Citadel jumped on Appalachian State early, scoring 38 points in the first half en route to a 52-28 victory on Saturday.  The Citadel moves to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Southern Conference for the first time since its championship season of 1992. The Mountaineers (1-2) had won 17 of the past 18 games against the Bulldogs, including eight in a row.

When he got there, retired Army Lt. Gen. Colby Broadwater faced a few problems.The American College of the Building Arts, which had made the Old City Jail on Magazine Street its base, couldn't manage its $3 million budget. It owned too much property. It was stuck in expensive service contracts it couldn't afford. It was struggling to pay salaries. And all the while, it was trying to improve its academic position so it might become an accredited institution.

At issue is the August appointment of Charleston businessman and Republican supporter Mallory Factor (Citadel visiting projessor) to the board. Rep. Chip Limehouse, R-Charleston and current chairman of the Aviation Authority board, said Factor's appointment was done properly.

Abipartisan group of Charleston legislators took the right course this week by voting to rescind an August nomination to the Charleston County Aviation Authority. Gov. Nikki Haley should concur.  The appointment of Mallory Factor (Citadel visiting professor) to a vacancy on the authority failed to meet the accountability test in a number of ways.

With just over 50 days until the 2012 presidential election, Americans are searching for the truth behind both candidates. While everyone seems to have an opinion, facts often seem to be lacking.  Much of what is lacking can be found in a newly published book titled "Shadowbosses: Government Unions Control America and Rob Taxpayers Blind," by Mallory Factor. He is a professor of international politics and American government at The Citadel and co-founder of the Monday Meeting, a gathering of intellectuals, journalists and politicians who discuss current events.

The president's list is the most distinguished awards list on which a cadet can be placed. It indicates excellence in academics and military duties for the previous semester.

Bateman graduated from Macon’s Lanier High School in 1941, then entered The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, according to a biography Bartness provided. He left college to train as a U.S. Army pilot on the P-40 Warhawk and flew combat missions in a P-51 Mustang with the Flying Tigers under Gen. Claire Lee Chennault. After World War II, he graduated from The Citadel, got a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School, then volunteered again for missions during the Korean War.

“Locally we had issues with schools here, too,” Vanatta said, referring to Skip ReVille, a former coach, teacher and Bible study leader convicted in June of molesting 23 boys in the Lowcountry. “I think locally we understand this is not just a Penn State problem but a problem all over.”  It would be nice if The Citadel, Pinewood Prep, Moultrie Middle School and some of the other places ReVille worked or coached came together for child abuse prevention fundraisers in this heartwarming Penn State spirit.

Meanwhile, two Palmetto State schools – The Citadel and USC-Aiken – were ranked top public Southern universities and colleges, respectively, and Clemson University held its top-25 ranking among national public universities for a fifth straight year.

Billy O’Dell will be honored Friday for being the longest-serving state senator in Anderson County’s history.O’Dell, a 1960 Citadel graduate, ran the O’Dell Corp. broom and mop manufacturing company until his recent retirement. He has been married to his wife, Gayle, for 47 years, and their children now run the business.

The Citadel and 11 of the state's technical colleges are partnering to expand educational opportunities for South Carolina students. "The partnerships will give students greater flexibility and choice and will make The Citadel's outstanding leadership development program available all across the state of South Carolina" said Bob McNamara, associate dean of Evening Undergraduate Studies at The Citadel.

College football may rule the roost on Saturdays, but this Saturday, youth football will take center stage at The Citadel's Johnson Hagood Stadium. With the Bulldogs on the road to play Appalachian State at 3:30 p.m., Clemson playing Furman at 3 p.m. and South Carolina tackling Alabama-Birmingham at 7 p.m., football fans can get an early pigskin fix before settling back to watch their favorite schools.

The Citadel was named the top public university in the South for the second consecutive year in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges rankings, which were released today. The military college also ranked eighth in the South for best value; first in the region among public and private schools for its rate of alumni giving; and its engineering program ranked 17th in the nation, up from a rank of 20th last year.

Grooms said he was able to spend time with former presidential candidate Rick Santorum, who spotted Grooms in a crowd. Santorum’s oldest son is now a freshman at The Citadel, and Grooms expects Santorum will spend more time at Berkeley County functions, he said.

Here’s one of the reasons Wofford starting quarterback Brian Kass was not terribly upset about being replaced as the first-string holder on kicks. In the scoring summary of last season’s game at The Citadel, there is a line that reads: “Brian Kass rush failed.” He described it this week at “Brian Kass got crushed.”

Todd Garrett told Charleston County lawmakers he first got serious about education when he got kicked out of high school. Moments later, they made him the newest member of the Charleston County School Board.The county's legislative delegation heard from five people hoping to be picked to finish the few months left in the term of Toya Hampton Green, who resigned her downtown school board seat last month because she was moving to Columbia.

 Troy University announced in a press release Wednesday that Mobile native John Hartwell has been named the director of athletics at the school. A 1987 graduate of The Citadel, Hartwell spent four plus years as a CPA with Ernst & Young before returning to his alma mater to serve as the Director of Internal Audit in 1991. In his three years working at The Citadel, Hartwell also was the basketball color commentator for the Citadel Network. From 1994 to 1997, he was in private business as the Chief Financial Officer for a $36 million (annual sales) beverage distributor on the South Carolina coast.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Citadel and the College of Charleston are among the top five public schools in the South region, according to an annual survey released by U.S. News & World Report Wednesday. For a second consecutive year, The Citadel was ranked number one in the category ranking top public schools in the South.

The Citadel pulled off one of the biggest wins in the Football Championship Subdivision so far this season last Saturday, upsetting then-No. 3 Georgia Southern 23-21 on a late 37-yard field goal by Thomas Warren. For a Bulldogs squad that has struggled in recent years, it was a breakthrough victory against the defending Southern Conference champions.

Wingate University is the highest-rated school in North Carolina, having moved up two rankings from last year. Elsewhere in the Carolinas, Appalachian State University rated 7th; The Citadel 8^th; and Elon University 15^th. 

Retired, the 87-year-old Funderburk now lives in Rock Hill. He already had completed a year at The Citadel when he entered flight training school in Arizona as an 18-year-old. Within 14 months, he had earned his wings and was shipped off to Europe.

That might be easier said than done, as The Citadel's upset of Georgia Southern has brought some buzz to the military school's campus. The 2-0 Bulldogs are ranked this week for the first time since 2008, breaking into the FCS Coaches' Poll at No. 23 and The Sports Network media poll at No. 21.

A commemoration will also be held at the Holliday Alumni Hall at The Citadel, located across from Johnson Hagood Stadium.  Newly-appointed City of Charleston Fire Chief Karen Brack will be in attendance as the Charleston Fire Department Honor Guard carries out a presentation of the colors. Other fire and medical personnel from the area will be on site paying respects as well.

If you could look into the future, past the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, would you have imagined America's war on terror would go on for the next 11 years?Or that the daily lives of thousands of your Lowcountry neighbors would be forever altered, including in the way they do their jobs and how they travel or communicate?  Or that 17 men from The Citadel would give their lives waging that war, surpassing the 15 killed in service during World War I?

The project seeks to revitalize an area between the city's medical complex and The Citadel along the Ashley River as an area to grow research and technology businesses. The Horizon site is a 20-acre section of a larger redevelopment site. The site now is largely open space used for parking for The Citadel and the Medical University.

CHARLESTON, S.C. --  Charleston Mayor Joe Riley and Medical University of South Carolina President Ray Greenberg have announced plans for a $1 billion, 20-year development on the Charleston peninsula. Riley told reporters Monday the project could be the largest in the city's history. Officials say the Horizon District between the city's medical complex and The Citadel along the Ashley River will be developed for housing, stores and research and technology businesses.

The Georgia Southern Eagles fell from third to 10th in the FCS rankings after losing to The Citadel, 23-21. The Eagles are one of the main contenders to win the FCS National Championship, but suffered an early defeat to the previously unranked Bulldogs. After beating the Eagles, The Citadel moved to No. 23

It was not a football game that got the crowd cheering at The Citadel’s Hagood Stadium on Sunday afternoon; it was the high-impact music and energetic dancing of high school and college bands. Bands are a big deal in predominantly black Southern schools, as the 24th annual Palmetto Invitational Band Classic demonstrated,

The Citadel coach Kevin Higgins probably was thinking the same about his team Saturday after it beat then-No. 3 Georgia Southern, 23-21, in a Southern Conference opener. On Monday, The Citadel made one of the poll's other significant moves by    entering the rankings at No. 21 - the Bulldogs' first appearance in the Top 25  since the Oct. 13, 2008 rankings.

The Eagles, who were ranked third in the Sept. 3 polls, were nipped by The Citadel 23-21 in Charleston, S.C., on Saturday. The Citadel, unranked a week ago, moved up to 23rd in the coaches poll and 21st in the media poll.

PSI Senior Scientist Faith Vilas and PSI Associate Research Scientist Luke Sollitt, who is an Assistant Professor of Physics at The Citadel, are the inventors of Atsa. Vilas, Atsa Project Scientist, and Sollitt, Atsa Deputy Project Scientist, led the four-day project at XCOR, assisted by Danielle Barrett of Trident Technical College, Todd Rhodes of Francis Marion University, Daniel Pittman from The Citadel and Larry Smith of Fidem Technica, who provides mechanical engineering support to the Atsa team.

The adjustments made by The Citadel to shut down No. 3 Georgia Southern’s powerful offense in the second half Saturday night were simple, according to senior Chris Billingslea. “Basically, the coaches came and hit us in the head and said, ‘We’ve got to take this guy down,’” the defensive end said after the Bulldogs’ shocking 23-21 win over GSU at Johnson Hagood Stadium.

Planetary Science Institute scientists and undergraduate students from The Citadel and other South Carolina colleges visited XCOR Aerospace in Mojave, Calif., to fit the Atsa Suborbital Observatory Mark I camera in an engineering model of the Lynx Mark I spacecraft.

The Citadel basketball team released its 2012-13 schedule on Wednesday, showcasing a slate that will include 14 home games, five first time opponents and three teams that earned bids to a 2012 postseason tournament.

Playing a volleyball tournament at the Pentagon is no routine matter. "Lots of paperwork," said Citadel coach Amir Khaledi, whose squad will play in the All-Academy Championships this weekend at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. "It was a lengthy process to get everybody cleared and approved. But, I think it will all be worth it."

As kickoff approached last Saturday at Johnson Hagood Stadium, Bay Amrhein began to get a strange feeling in the pit of his stomach. "It was weird," said Amrhein, a redshirt junior at The Citadel. "I kept telling myself I wasn't nervous. But when game time came, I was so nervous, up until that first snap."

Free safety Jamill Lott and wide receiver Sean Price of Appalachian State, who were suspended for last Saturday's opener against East Carolina for a violation of team rules, will be eligible to play Saturday against Montana, coach Jerry Moore said Thursday.

Moore originally said that the two would be suspended against Montana as well, but then said they will serve the second game of the suspension either Sept. 15 against The Citadel or Sept. 22 against Chattanooga

The Citadel will host the All-Military Classic and play in ESPN's BracketBuster during the 2012-13 basketball season.

VMI, Air Force and Army will come to McAlister Field House for the All-Military Classic from Nov. 10-11 to open the season, and the Bulldogs will be on the road for the BracketBuster game on Feb. 23.

The 14-game home slate also includes a Nov. 24 game with Radford and a Jan. 14 game with rival College of Charleston. The Bulldogs will play at Charleston Southern on Dec. 4, at St. Bonaventure on Dec. 19, at Georgia Tech on Dec. 22 and at Clemson on Jan. 1. That game could be moved to Jan. 2 if Clemson's football team is in the Orange Bowl.

A new program will allow students to earn an associate degree at the Technical College of the Lowcountry while earning credits toward a four-year degree at The Citadel.  Called "2 + 2," the partnership between The Citadel, TCL and 10 other S.C. technical colleges was announced Tuesday. The program began in the 1980s with Trident Technical College in Charleston.

The Bulldogs are coming off their own blowout win, and they too piled up the points with a strong effort on the ground.
