The General Westmoreland Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW) will conduct the 12th annual Massing of the Colors ceremony at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 1 at The Citadel’s Summerall Chapel.

The Citadel will mark the 166th birthday of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, Corps Day, with events from Thursday, March 12, through Sunday, March 15, that will focus on The Citadel’s tradition of leadership development.

The Citadel Gospel Choir will hold a 20-year reunion concert at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, March 15, in Summerall Chapel as part of Corps Day Weekend festivities.

The Citadel is celebrating the 2009 International Year of Astronomy, which marks the anniversary of many astronomical and scientific milestones, including the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s use of the telescope to study the skies. On Tuesday Feb. 24, the first floor of The Citadel’s Grimsley Hall will become the home of two enormous prints of the Spiral Galaxy M101. One print is a composite of more than 50 images from the Chandra X-Ray Satellite, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Spitzer Space Telescope which take images in the infrared—the print is the Hubble Telescope’s largest and most detailed spiral galaxy image. A second print shows the images for all three telescopes.

Ryan, chancellor of the University of New Orleans, will present “Leadership in a Time of Crisis: Lessons Learned from Hurricane Katrina” as a part of The Citadel School of Business Administration South Carolina Bank and Trust Leadership Series at The Citadel at 5:45 p.m., March 2, in Bond Hall, room 165.

At 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, The Citadel will conduct an emergency lockdown exercise to test the campus emergency warning sirens, the BulldogAlert emergency notification system, and the implementation of the college’s emergency lockdown procedures as outlined in Appendix B of the college’s Emergency Response Plan.

A U.S. Coast Guard rescue helicopter and fast boat will on display 10 a.m. until noon on Wednesday, Feb. 18 on The Citadel parade ground. Sponsored by the military college’s new Coast Guard club, the purpose of the event is to provide information to cadets interested in the Coast Guard Reserve program or Officer Candidate School. A Coast Guard officer will be available to answer questions.

General Electric Company Senior Executive James Mitchell Jr. will deliver the 2009 Black History Month keynote address 6:30 p.m., Feb. 26 in Graham Copeland Auditorium on The Citadel campus. Sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, The Citadel African American Studies Program and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Mitchell’s talk is entitled “The significance of the election of President Barack Obama and why America needs an economic strategy at this crucial moment in history.”

Army Col. James A. Merchant III, a Special Operations Command Soldier, was killed last Friday in a parachute training accident near MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa Fla.
