Shaking hands with graduates who have just received their diploma always causes me to wonder how well The Citadel has fulfilled its mission of developing these young people into principled leaders. This rhetorical question – one that every president has undoubtedly pondered – is not answered until some time after our graduates sing the Alma Mater and toss their hats.

The people in the Pee Dee Coalition against Sexual Assault and Domestic Abuse are doing a remarkable job. Sexual assault, family violence and child abuse are crimes that rob people of their sense of security and self. For 20 years you have been making a difference in the Pee Dee Region and I congratulate you on this anniversary.

The past week has been a tough one for the Corps of Cadets. The day after you returned, I met with you by class and discussed the problem of respect within the Corps that has manifested itself in many ways including sexual harassment and sexual assault. I know that this was a surprise to many of you.

It’s hard to imagine how we could have crammed more into our first six months at The Citadel. In addition to the inauguration, the capital campaign kickoff and a graduation in which General Peter Pace’s speech drew national attention, Donna and I have worked hard to get to know the people on campus.

During my first month as president, I have been trying to understand the dynamics of The Citadel. After reviewing massive amounts of information and listening to dozens of people, my initial assessment is that much of what we are doing is very good. This is a great place and a good time to be here.
