Saturday wasn't just another opening day for Bulldog football. It also was the opening of the new West side at Johnson Hagood Stadium.

The freshman have completed their first week of military training and upperclass cadets have returned to campus for the start of a new school year. Classes begin Wednesday.

More than 100 cadets returned to campus this week to learn what it means to be principled leaders. They are taking part in Leadership Seminar, which is an annual training program and college-wide effort to enhance leadership development and ethical growth at The Citadel.

Third Battalion Commander Cadet Lt. Col. Valentin Boza (right) and Citadel graduate and Marine Maj. Kevin Jarrard meet at this year's Leadership Seminar banquet. Jarrard, the keynote speaker, is credited with helping rescue two Iraqi children in need of critical medical care in the United States. He discussed leadership and ethics during his speech.

Cadets taking part in leadership training this week learn trust and teamwork through obstacle course challenges at James Island County Park in Charleston. More than 100 cadets who will lead the Corps of Cadets gave up part of their summer to return to campus for the leadership training and to get ready for the start of the 2008-2009 academic year.
