The traditions of United States military reviews and parades began at Valley Forge. At that time, brigades of soldiers were formed in order of battle. Modern day ceremonies, including The Citadel's are conducted to render honors, preserve tradition, and foster esprit de corps.

The sun rises over The Citadel campus and cadets make their way to class. A typical day begins between 5 and 6 a.m. for many cadets.

Bond Volunteer Aspirants - juniors vying for a spot on the 2005 Summerall Guards - go through intense physical workouts and drills as part of the annual tryouts for the 61-member silent drill platoon. Shaving their heads is tradition for aspirants.

Cadets lined up in Mark Clark Hall Tuesday, Jan. 20, for the monthly campus blood drive. The Citadel is the third largest contributor to the Red Cross' blood and platelet donation programs in the Lowcountry.

The McAlister Maniacs and Bulldog basketball fans from across the area return to the hardwood this weekend for Saturday's 2 p.m. game against Chattanooga. Tipoff for Monday's home matchup against Furman is 7 p.m.

Campus calm - for now

The campus is quiet now but soon the hustle and bustle of college life will return. The holiday furlough ends Sunday, Jan. 11 for cadets who head back to class on Wednesday, Jan. 14. College of Graduate and Professional Studies (CGPS) classes begin Monday, Jan. 5 for graduate students and Monday, Jan. 12 for evening undergraduates.
